Device Won't Turn On
You can't get your Chromebook to turn on and it shows no signs of turning on.
First Step:
Determine if it is on with a blank screen or off, and if the battery is charged.
(The exact procedure depends on you knowing the LED iondications for your model. here a Samsung Chromebook 3 is used.)

1. Look at the LED to the left of the DC jack. Is it Off or Blue/Blue flashing?
-Black means the Chromebook is turned off. Go to step 2.
-Blue/Blue flashing means the Chromebook is turned on. Turn it off.
2. Press the power button for 10 seconds. The LED should turn off.
- If not, press the power 2. button again and hold it for 15 seconds.
3. With the Chromebook off, close the cover.
4. Connect the charger. An LED should indicate that the chareger is connected and charging.
5. Wait 5 minutes.
6. Look at the LED to the left of the DC jack. Is it Black, Red or Green
Series 3 Test
- If Black the Charger is not working. Check the power cord connections at both ends, then try a known working power outlet.ither the Charger is not working.
- If red, the Chromebook battery may be discharged. Wait 15 minutes.
(Full charge takes sveral hours when the Chromebook is turned off. It is better to keep the charger connected whenever possible than to let the battery run down. Keeping it charged will increase the battery life and maintain its capacity. Frequently discharging to the warning level will rapidly reduce the battery capacity and life. )
- If green, the battery is fully charged, procede
7. Open the cover. Wait 10 seconds.
- Does the power LED turn Blue / indicate that the Chromebook is running??
- Does the screen turn on? If not, but the LED indicates that the Chromebook is running, If not, unplug the charger and go to the section: “Reset your Chromebook hardware”.
Reset your Chromebook hardware
To fix some Chromebook problems, you might need to reset your Chromebook hardware, also called a hard reset.
Try a hard reset only after other ways to fix the problem have failed. It will restart your Chromebook hardware (like your keyboard and touchpad), and might delete some files in your Downloads folder.
Hard reset your Chromebook
For most Chromebooks, follow the steps below:
1. Eject any memory cards and unplug all USB devices.
2. Turn off your Chromebook by holding down the Power button (above the [backspace] ) for 10 seconds.
3. Simultaneously press and hold Refresh (above the [4} ) and Power .
3. Release both keys after 10 seconds.
- The Chromebook should start up. If not, press Power once again.
Charger Is Broken
Your battery may have drained and the charger is not supplying power to charge it back up. See the section on charger troubleshooting.
Battery Has Reached End Of Life
The rechargeable battery in your Chromebook has a limit to its lifetime. Eventually the battery loses the ability to hold a charge and needs to be replaced.
Power Key Is Broken
The power key on your keyboard may not be registering a signal. See the section on keyboard troubleshooting.
Motherboard is Broken
The main board of your Chromebook may be broken and needs replacement. Note that when replacing the motherboard, you will lose any data saved on the Chromebook itself, since it is stored on the old motherboard. Data saved with Google, such as on Google Drive, will be retained so long as you sign in to your Google Account with the new motherboard.
Screen Is Too Dark Or Completely Black
Your screen is too dark or doesn't show anything at all, but you know your Chromebook is on because of the power light or sounds it makes.
Brightness Setting Too Low
Your settings for brightness may be set to low. Turn up the brightness by pressing the eighth key on the top row of the keyboard, with the larger sun symbol.
Screen Is Broken
If the light on the power button lights up and the Chromebook works when you plug it into an external screen over HDMI, then your Chromebook's screen may be broken and needs replacement.
Keyboard Keys Don't Work
Pressing the keys on your keyboard doesn't do anything.
Dirt Under Keys
If there is dirt under your keys, it may be preventing keys from triggering. Use a soft brush to clean out the dirt from under the keys.
Keyboard Connector Not Properly Seated
The ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard may have been connected improperly. Take apart your Chromebook and check that the connections have not become loose.

Your keyboard may be broken and needs to be replaced.
Speakers Crackling or Not Working
Your speakers make a crackling noise or you can't hear anything out of them.
Volume at Improper Level
If you cannot hear anything, first make sure your volume is loud enough. On the other hand, if your volume is too loud, it may make the speakers overload and crackle.
Speaker Obstruction
There may be something physically obstructing or touching the speakers, muffling or making them crackle. Follow our speaker replacement guide to take apart your Chromebook and check the speakers for obstruction.
Speakers are Broken
Your speakers may be simply broken and will need to be replaced.
Headphones/Headset Not Working
Your headphones or headset aren't playing sound from your Chromebook when plugged in.
Broken Headphones/Headset
Verify that the headphones or headset work with another device, since it may not be the Chromebook that is broken.
Dirt or Lint in Headphones Jack
The headphones/headset jack on your Chromebook (the hole you plug your headphones into) may need to be cleaned. Often it can fill up with dirt or lint. Using tweezers, gently attempt to pull out anything built up inside of the jack.
Motherboard is Broken
The main board of your Chromebook may be broken and need replacement. Note that replacing the motherboard, you will lose any data saved on the Chromebook itself, since it is stored on the old motherboard. Data saved with Google, such as on Google Drive, will be retained so long as you sign in to your Google Account with the new motherboard.
Charger Doesn't Work
Your charger won't charge your Chromebook and the charging light on the Chromebook does not light up.
Port is Broken
The port that connects the charger to the motherboard may have a loose connection or may be broken. Follow our charging port replacement guide to check the connections, and if necessary, replace the port.
Charger is Broken
If the light on the charger itself also does not light up, then the charger itself may be broken and needs replacement.
